Liang Yuchen

I am an artist and maker whose practice encompasses metalwork, casting and jewellery, alongside an interest in printmaking.

I explore how objects negotiate a balance between softness and rigidity. “Translation” across languages, materials and systems of meaning functions both as a central subject in my work and as a method through which I create. I currently use nomadology as a creative methodology. Rather than treating form, function or tradition as fixed, I approach them as structures that can be moved through, inverted and reassembled. Ready-made objects and natural materials often provide the starting points for my work. Through casting, forming, printing and hand-making, I remove familiar forms from their original contexts and encourage them to develop new material and symbolic relationships. My research focuses on the technical and cultural languages of metalwork, casting and jewellery. I am interested in how jewellery operates between the body, the object and social ritual, and in how material transformation can challenge the authority embedded in solemn or ritualised forms. By introducing softness, colour, playfulness and instability, I seek to disrupt established hierarchies and open space for multiple interpretations. My practice develops through material experimentation, research and iterative making, allowing each stage of the process to guide and reshape the final form of the work.
